Carat Weight
Diamonds occur more often in small sizes, the larger ones being rarer. Thus, the price per point (1/100th of a Carat) is higher in the same quality as the diamond size increases. In an effort to obtain the largest finished diamond from a rough stone, cuts are often made which result in a lower-quality diamond with less brilliance or "sparkle". When an ideally-proportioned diamond (high-quality cut) is created, it is done so to maximize beauty, even though additional weight may be lost.
